LLANO SECO UNIT and PINE CREEK UNIT of the SACRAMENTO RIVER NWR
Saturday, February 6th, 2010 at 7:30 a.m.
Meet at the Redding Convention Center to carpool.
Llano Seco has 2 viewing platforms making it a great
place to view waterfowl. Last year we had Eurasian
Green-winged Teal plus Golden Eagles. It’s
considered one of the best places in the valley to see
Eurasian Widgeon. The Pine Creek unit has some
walking so wear hiking shoes. An alternate to the Pine
Creek unit is Rancho Esquon near Durham, a private
ranch that has fantastic habitat.
We’ll decide on exact locations later. Be prepared for
a fun day of birding in the Chico area! Members of
Altacal Audubon from Chico will join us on this trip.
George Horn will lead. Phone 244-0581. Bring a
lunch for this all day trip.

behind the Monolith at Turtle Bay for this half-day,

The Cascade Community Park is at the end of Girvan

Road but before crossing Clear Creek. We will
assemble at the parking area at this small but birdfriendly
park which has frontage on both the
Sacramento River and Olney Creek. This varied
habitat attracts a surprising number of species. The
elusive California Thrasher has been seen there on
many occasions. Linda Aldrich will be your leader.

Turtle Bay and Kutras Lake. We will assemble in the

great cross section of waders, raptors, waterfowl,
gulls, and other birds can be seen close up with
usually a surprise of two on this half day walk.
Connie Word will lead.
LOCAL WEEKDAY BIRD WALK - LEMA RANCH
Tuesday, March 16th, 2010 at 8:00 a.m.
Lema Ranch, an oasis of open space in Redding, is
excellent year-around birding. The ponds, orchards,
and fields of the McConnell Foundation
Headquarters provide an abundance of birds. We will
look for Common Moorhens, rails, Lewis’s
Woodpecker, Lark Sparrows, and a variety of ducks.
This will be a 2-3 hour walk. We will meet at the
North Parking Lot off Hemmingway St.
Hemmingway St. is across from Mountain View
School on Shasta View Drive. Linda Aldrich will be
your leader. Fine public restrooms and paved trails
make this a very pleasant and rewarding bird walk.

Both birds and the spring vernal pool wildflower

accomplished butterfliers, will illustrate the commonly
seen butterflies in our region with exquisite pictures
and let us in on the hot spots where we can observe
these beautiful “other” flying creatures ourselves.
SECOND SATURDAY BIRD WALK
Saturday, April 10th, 2010 at 8:00 a.m.
We will switch locations from Turtle Bay to the
Shasta College Campus for this open-to-the public

variety of songbirds, waterbirds, and raptors. Meet at
the north parking lot on campus. John Coon will lead
this half-day walk.
DYR CREEK PRESERVE OUTING
Saturday, April 17th, 2010 at 7:30 a.m.
Join us for a hike up Dye Creek Canyon. We are
scheduling a repeat of this jaunt that proved so
popular last year. The Nature Conservancy manages
this working cattle ranch, hunt club, and ecological
preserve west of Los Molinos, Tehama County.
Golden Eagles are a possibility. Wild flowers should
be abundant. The trail is rough and a small stream
crossing should provide some excitement. Bring
water, a lunch, and sturdy shoes. A hiking pole could
come in handy. We will rendezvous at the Redding
Convention Center to carpool. Bill Oliver will lead.
LOCAL WEEKDAY BIRD WALK - ANDERSON RIVER PARK
Tuesday, April 20th, 2010 at 8:00 a.m.
This gem of riparian habitat has many groomed trails

will assemble at the amphitheater in the Park for this
half-day outing.
