Second Saturday Bird Walk at Mary Lake

Mary Lake

This small lake in west Redding yields a variety of birds in spite of the drought in recent years. Last fall a Pectoral Sandpiper was a surprising visitor and a Eurasian Wigeon spent much of the summer there. We will walk the 1-mile paved trail around the lake with a side trip to the Old Catholic Cemetery. Assemble at Lakeside Drive at the trail head to meet your leader Bill Oliver.

Second Saturday Bird Walk at John Reginato River Access Trail

This trail leaves the parking lot of the John Reginato Boat Launch on the west side of the Sacramento River off South Bonnyview Road. Good views of the Sacramento River are afforded on this short trail as it traverses a mixed riparian woodland. We should see a variety of winter resident passerines and waterfowl and possibly a few late leaving summer residents. Assemble at the small parking area at the corner of Washington Ave. and Park Marina Drive for carpooling and last minute instructions. This ½-day walk is open to the public and all birding skill levels are welcome.

Second Saturday Bird Walk at Shasta College

With early fall migrants returning and before late summer residents leave, the oak woodlands, wastewater treatment pond, Stillwater Ck. riparian, and open fields should support a wide variety of species. Meet in Shasta College’s north parking lot for this 1⁄2 day trip that is open to the public. Bill Oliver and Connie Word will co-leaders.

Second Saturday Bird Walk – Biodiversity Festival

Wintu Audubon Society is participating in the Biodiversity Festival, part of the Whiskeytown BioBlitz, inviting the public to “Celebrate Birds, Bees, Bats, Butterflies & all Pollinators!” at the Whiskeytown Environmental School (NEEDS camp).

Wintu Audubon will be on hand Saturday to lead bird walks, share expertise and provide information to the public about our feathered friends and their part in the local ecosystem. Come join us. We will be joined by resource experts on animals, traditional people, and the local environment. Enjoy hands-on science, nature, food and music while learning about the extraordinary biodiversity of Whiskeytown National Recreation Area. Share your birding knowledge and participate in this family event.

Second Saturday Bird Walk at Shasta College

Now that most wintering ducks have moved on and migrating passerines are passing through, it’s time once again to shift our birding to the Shasta College Campus. The oak woodlands, wastewater treatment pond, riparian, and fields support a wide variety of species. Meet in Shasta College’s north parking lot for this ½ day trip that is open to the public. Alicia and Pablo Herrera will lead.
