On Saturday January 17th we will tour the Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge. Caravan leaves the parking lot at Kutras Park at 6:00 am or meet at the parking lot at the refuge at 7:30 am. We will begin with a wetland walk adjacent to the visitor center, followed by the six mile auto tour loop with a stop at the viewing platform for lunch.
We will have walkie talkies to hand out to each vehicle. The new visitor center will be open and restrooms are available. Bring a lunch and snacks to eat during the tour and at our pause at the platform. Contact Larry Jordan for more information at webmaster@shastabirdingsociety.org.

This Sanctuary is a very active hotspot between the fall to the spring great migrations. Many bird species transition or stay here through the winter months because of this area’s unique supplies of water and food, as well is the vast surrounding areas of limited public access.
We will start our walk from the Monoith parking area for 1.5 miles on a paved trail. In this network of trails, we will travel through the heart of the Bird Sanctuary sharing for us great views of the surrounding river system, secluded ponds, and showcase a grand riparian habitat.
This half-day event should yield many varieties of waterbirds, woodpeckers, some raptors, and a variety of songbird species in this wonderful area of flora and fauna.

Always wanted to learn more about birds but not sure where to start? Join Shasta Birding Society for a family and beginner friendly bird walk at the benches by the Sundial bridge at 9 am to walk the Turtle Bay Sanctuary Trail and discover the hidden world of birds all around us! The trail is wheelchair accessible and benches are found throughout. The walk will last about an hour. Binoculars are provided. Join Rebeca Ladrón de Guevara as we take a leisurely one mile walk along the Turtle Bay Sanctuary Trail. This walk will begin at the south end of the Sundial Bridge and take us along the Sacramento River to view waterfowl, woodpeckers, raptors, sparrows, and more. One of the best attributes of this trail is that we cannot only enjoy the excellent views along the river, on the other side of the trail we will be able to find several species of songbirds. Raptors are common in the area, including the Bald Eagle and Osprey. Park in the Turtle Bay Parking Lot. Rain cancels.
You are invited to join us at Kum Bay Xerel, in the Wintu language means “Shady Oak Village”. This open space with a wide paved trail provides great access to the Sacramento River south of Redding Ca.
To get there take the Knighton Road Exit (#673) from I-5, turn west on Knighton Road and make an immediate left (south) on the frontage road of Riverland Drive. Continue for about ½ mile and you will see a gate, parking lot, and restroom to the right side of the road. We all will meet at the trailhead at the south end of the parking lot.
On the trail, the first ¾ of a mile is paved with excellent ADA access and benches to rest. At the end of the pavement, there is an additional mile of dirt trails on adjacent BLM land.
Expect wintering waterfowl on the water and many songbird species along the lush wooded riparian corridor, as well as raptors, including eagles, soaring overhead.

Location: We will all meet at the Loomis Museum parking lot, located 1.1 mile from SR44/89 turnoff at the north-end park entrance. There is a park entrance fee, and all annual or lifetime pass holders are allowed entry to the park.
Walking distance total estimated at 1.7 miles (2.7 km) the trail is unpaved, but the views around the lake are spectacular.
Manzanita Lake elevation is 5,900 feet surrounded by a mixed conifer forest, which provides a great habitat for a wonderful variety of bird species. We are hoping to catch some Warbler species on their fall migration south.

I do have two seats available for anyone in need of help with the park entry but you will need to contact me directly by email. Larry Jordan will also have three seats available to anyone who needs free access. The rideshare meet location will be at the Shingletown Library parking lot. Our departure is at 7:30am from the library.
